One had cancer and the other was recovering from a stroke. He was then taken ill himself, and has been receiving benefits for around eighteen months.

Doug moved into residential care late in life and is untypical of many younger residents. He has a First Class degree in geophysics and has a previous employment record. He also volunteers at a local school. He is shocked at the limitations that residential care placed on him, but has found it difficult to access independent living in the community.

Helen lives with her partner, and three of her five children. Her partner works full-time, so she stays at home to look after the children. She’s also the chairwoman of ‘Women of Thornaby’, a support group for local women.

Yeukai, London

Yeukai, 25, is an asylum seeker from Zimbabwe. As a student she was politically active against the Mugabe regime: arranging meetings, handing out flyers, and demonstrating. As a result of her activities, she was targeted by the government and forced to flee to Britain in 2001.

Ismail Aboualgasim, Leeds

Ismail fled the conflict in Darfur in 2004, but was refused asylum by the Home Office. He is currently living in shared accommodation in Leeds and receives £35 a week in vouchers. But his future is in limbo, while the Government considers new evidence that Darfuris who returned to Sudan have faced torture.
